Adult Faith Formation
Compliance with National Directory for Catechesis

Because of its importance and because all other forms of catechesis are oriented in some way to it, the catechesis of adults must have high priority at all levels of the Church
. (NDC, p. 187)

St. Clare Church makes adult faith formation a high priority by having a full time pastoral staff person who is responsible for adult faith formation and a generous budget for a variety of adult faith formation opportunities. All other persons on our pastoral staff also have substantial involvement with much of adult faith formation including liturgical education, parent education connected with sacramental preparation for children, small faith groups, renewal weekends, preparation for Christian initiation and marriage.

Since adults are called to be disciples of Christ, the content of adult catechesis should be a catechesis directed toward discipleship.
(NDC, p. 190)

The aim of all of our adult formation programs is to provide not only information about Church teaching but also to provide catechesis that will lead to transformation for more faithful discipleship. Bible and Catechism study groups study scriptural and catechism background but also raise questions for how this information can be lived in their daily lives. We offer Men’s and Women’s Renewal Weekends along with a 12 segment follow-up program that is s directed at discipleship. Parent education provides specific suggestions for discipleship within family life. Scripture reflection for our Christian initiation of adults process asks catechumens to focus on the question, “What is God asking of me as a result of the Word of God that I heard at Mass?” JustFaith programs not only offer information about Catholic social teaching and challenges within our culture but includes weekly prayer and questions and a closing retreat to help participants to focus on how they are to live as disciples.

The content of adult catechesis should be as comprehensive and diverse as the Church’s mission. (NCD, p. 190)

We offer and promote retreats, large group presentation, small group studies, and individual education through various media on a wide range of topics including Bible study, prayer and spirituality, Catholic Creed, sacraments and liturgy, Catholic social teaching, various other moral issues, and family life.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is the normative reference text for the catechesis of adults. (NDC, p. 190)

We offer two study groups that use the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults. This catechism is specifically designed for use in small groups and is based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church . (CCC) References from the CCC are used regularly in our Catechumenate meetings and are also included in our Christ Renews His Parish formation period. Material from the CCC is often used in large group presentations.

Additionally, we sponsor a presentation on a pastoral letter by the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and a presentation on a papal encyclical on alternating years. References to many of these documents are used in the catechumenate, Christ Renews His Parish, and large group presentations.
