CRISIS RESPONSE PLAN


Teacher Responsibilities

FIRE
• When the alarm sounds, direct the students to line up.
• Close all windows.
• Turn off lights, close door.
• Lead students toward your designated exit.
• Line up a safe distance from the building, in your designated area.
• Check attendance and maintain control of all students in your care.
• Notify a CRT member if a student is missing or injured.
• Await the all clear before reentering the building.

TORNADO
If you are in the building
• When the warning is sounded, direct the students to proceed to designated area in a single file.
• Direct the students to kneel facing the wall and cover their heads with their hands.
• Remain in this position until all clear is given.
• Take roll as soon as possible.
• In the aftermath, check for injuries and administer first aid.

If you are outside the building
• If possible, move students inside a shelter.
• If the tornado is approaching, direct the students to lie down in a low-lying area, such as a ditch or a culvert.
• As soon as feasible, move to a sheltered location.
• Account for all students in your care.
• In the aftermath, check for injuries and administer first aid.

LOCKDOWN
• Check hallway for students.
• If it is safe for them to return to their own classroom, direct them to do so immediately. If it is not safe, bring them into your room.
• Lock, then close classroom door.
• Turn off lights.
• Place students in an area of the classroom where they cannot be seen from the hallway.
• Account for all students in your class; note any absences.
• Note any students under your control who are not members of your class.

INTRUDER / HOSTAGE
• Follow Lockdown Procedures
• If directly confronted, follow the instruction of the intruder.
• If abduction occurs while class is in session, attempt to persuade the abductor not to commit the act, but do not place yourself or other children in harm’s way.
• Summon help if it can be accomplished without placing you or your students in further danger.
• Keep students calm while awaiting the arrival of the police.

BOMB THREAT
• Upon notification to evacuate the school, proceed to pre-designated evacuation point.
• Take roll and advise CRT member of any missing student(s).
• Maintain control of students and class integrity after evacuation.
• Do not enter the school until directed to do so by a CRT member or police/fire authority.

EARTHQUAKE
If you are in a building
• In classroom, tell students to lie down beside desks or tables, and cover head with arms.
• In hallways or open area, move students to an interior wall, and tell them to crouch down and cover head with arms.
• If near an exit, proceed to your designated area as posted in your classroom.

If you are outside a building
• Move away from trees, buildings, and power lines.

In aftermath
• Check for fires and extinguish.
• Check for injuries and administer first aid.
• Take roll as soon as possible.
• Be alert to aftershocks.


Hall Monitor Responsibilities

FIRE
• Sound the alarm – pull the fire alarm handle
• Close all windows and doors
• Assist Catechists in escorting all students out of the building.
• Have each Catechist check in with you and report to CRT
• Await the all clear before reentering the building.

TORNADO
• When the public warning is sounded, prompt Catechist to follow the Crisis Response Plan
• Direct the students into hallways, then kneel facing the wall and cover their heads with their hands.
• In the aftermath, check for injuries and administer first aid.
• Account for all students in your care.

LOCKDOWN
• Close interior doors between school & gym
• Sound the Lockdown Alarm via the PA phone system / Call 911
• Check hallway for students and escort them to a safe place
• Place students in an area of the classroom where they cannot be seen from the hallway.
• Account for all students in your care.
• If directly confronted, follow the instruction of the intruder.
• If abduction occurs, attempt to persuade the abductor not to commit the act, but do not place yourself or other children in harm’s way.
• Summon help if it can be accomplished without placing you or your students in further danger.
